Freezing Panes

If your worksheet is wide and/or long you will notice that when you scroll down or right you can no longer see all the column and row headings.

If desired, you can freeze columns and rows so that they do not scroll with the rest of the worksheet, thereby allowing you to view column and row headings as you scroll throughout your worksheet.

Freezing the Top Row Only

If you only want to freeze the top row of your worksheet:

  1. Display the View ribbon and click on Freeze Panes within the Window area of the View ribbon.

  2. Choose Freeze Top Row. As you scroll down through your worksheet, the top row will always be visible.

Freezing the First Column Only

If you only want to freeze the first column of your worksheet (which may or may not be Column A if some columns are hidden):

  1. Display the View ribbon and click on Freeze Panes within the Window area of the View ribbon.

  2. Choose Freeze First Column. As you scroll right through your worksheet, the first columns will always be visible.

Freezing Rows and Columns

If you want to specify which rows and columns to freeze:

  1. Select (click in) the first movable cell.  In the following example, if you wish to freeze the column headings (in rows 1 & 2) as well as the row headings (in column A), you would click in cell B3 in this step.  An easy rule of thumb is that when you choose to freeze panes, all rows above and to the left of the current cell will freeze.

  2. Display the View ribbon and click on Freeze Panes within the Window area of the View ribbon.

  3. Select Freeze Panes from the choices displayed.

Unfreezing Panes

  1. Display the View ribbon and click on Freeze Panes within the Window area of the View ribbon.

  2. Select Unfreeze Panes.
