# Extract Partial Cell Data

Microsoft Excel 2010

To copy (extract) only part of a cell's contents, try the **LEFT** or **MID**
function. The **Left** function will extract characters from the left of
a cell, the **MID** function will extract characters within a cell.

## LEFT Function

To extract only the first few characters of a cell:

- Select the cell where you wish
the result to be displayed.
- Enter the formula
**=LEFT(cell reference, number of characters to extract).**

**Example**: If cell A1 contains the number 456789, the command **=LEFT(A1,3)**
will produce 456.

## MID Function

To extract part of a cell:

- Select the cell where you wish
the result to be displayed.
- Enter the formula
**=MID(cell reference, character position, number of
characters)**.

**Example**: If cell A1 contains the number 456789, the command **=MID(A1,3,2)**
will produce 67. The 3 refers to the third character. The 2 refers to how
